This destination is a very special one. Just the sound of it’s name makes my mind imagine the bluest of waters and the most exotic of beaches. I’m talking about a gem on the Indian ocean called “Maldives”. Besides being well known as a holiday or even honeymoon destination, Maldives has many big names in the luxury segment offering unmatched getaways. Luckily, for me the job of picking the one was done by my friend Welf at Destination Elite. Within no time, we decided on Amilla Fushi. The reasons were simple that it is the newest and lately seemed to be the most talked about luxury beach resort in Maldives. Now, the focus was purely to achieve a sense of luxury that would truly surpass it all and stand as an epitome for the Elite getaway. Thus, my expectations were high.

This destination is a very special one. Just the sound of it’s name makes my mind imagine the bluest of waters and the most exotic of beaches. I’m talking about a gem on the Indian ocean called “Maldives”. I had long eyed one of those uber luxurious getaways in Maldives. And now when it was about to happen. I was doubly excited. Besides being well known as a holiday or even honeymoon destination, Maldives has many big names in the luxury segment offering unmatched getaways. Now with there being several options, it also meant that I had to do some choosing. Luckily, for me the job of picking the best one was done by my friend Welf at Destination Elite.
While, Destination Elite was recommended by some very reliable sources from my travel circles. While I could have blindly picked a place they’d offer. I specified them requirements mostly surrounding the idea that i was looking to have a rare and most exclusive of experiences. Within no time, we decided on Amilla Fushi. The reasons were simple that I was looking for the best and that is all that Destination Elite had in store for me.
Although, in the days to come, I would personally discover thousands of reasons everyday and witness innumerable moments of delight at Amilla. What also had my attention was the fact that Amilla is the newest and lately seemed to be the most talked about luxury beach resort in Maldives. Now, the focus was purely to achieve a sense of luxury that would truly surpass it all and stand as an epitome for the Elite getaway. Thus, my expectations were high.
And those were not just in the form where I wanted to see fancy facilities and be treated like royalty. But, I’ve always believed that places are as good as the people there. I am also the one for philosophies behind places and their approaches to service and their surroundings. Something, for which Amilla scored high points during my stay. And I’m sure telling you why in the many paragraphs to follow as I share the magical tale of my 4 nights stay at Amilla Fushi, Maldives.
Amilla Fushi is located on the Baa Atoll. It is amongst the 26 natural islands in the Indian Ocean. The whole island is covered by the resort. And the location also ensures that while you are never too far from Male. At the same time, you are also not on a busy route for passing by speed boats and sea planes. This would mean no disturbance and achieving that sense of being somewhere really cut off and far away from the world.
Since, mine was a late night arrival at Male airport. I was told there would be two options. Either a direct speed boat ride or a combination of a domestic flight to the nearest airport and then another 15 minutes of a speed boat ride to Amilla. I decided to pick the latter, because my flight from Colombo was barely 90 minutes and the domestic terminal is a minute’s walk.
As soon as I arrived, I was warmly greeted by a representative from Amilla. I was swiftly taken to a very comfortable looking lounge. I was told that I could just relax now. He would take care of checking in my luggage, keep a tab on my flight timings and come to receive me when it was time for boarding. I wished, If only every flight I take during my lifetime could be as simplified as this. Besides the comfortable couch, WiFi and Maldivian food. The fact that I needn’t worry about a thing, hinted that the luxury had already begun.
For the domestic flights, there was an option of the government airline and a private airline that sort of stood out with their flexible schedules and warm customer service. I booked a flight through Fly Me airlines. And this might just have been the shortest and the smoothest of flight journeys. My flight back to Male, after four days was also booked with them. And I wouldn’t think twice before recommending it for the simple reason that it all went as planned and on time.
Upon, arrival at the Dharavendhoo airport. I was received yet again by another friendly rep from Amilla Fushi. Only this time it would be my Khateeb, who would take care of all my plans and needs during the stay. After, I was explained the meaning of that term. I quite liked the presence of a concept like “khateeb” which is traditional Maldivian for your own private butler.
Yet again, all my luggage was taken care of and I being the royalty that I felt I was, got many smiles and welcomes onto the speedboat. Before the ride, I was offered refreshments and informed about the timings. Every bit of the journey and mannerisms reflected the fact that people around me were well trained in hospitality. The ride was really exciting. If you’ve ever had a speedboat ride in the middle of the night. You would know why. In no time, we zoomed through the waters and arrived.
Swiftly, onto the buggy that would take 5 minutes Of driving to reach my room. Giving you the idea of how big the place was. On the way there my Khateeb kind of oriented me roughly with what I could see in the night. And told me that he’d take me on a tour of the island in the morning orienting me with the facilities.
Little did I know that in the next few seconds when I step into my room, I would be amazed by the sheer size of it and the tasteful interiors. It had what normally gets the “state of art” description. All that I could possibly think of needing was in there and then some more. When I opened the huge walk in windows, I could see my private pool and sense the calmness of ocean. I couldn’t wait to see how amazing the view would be next morning. The truth is, I could barely sleep due to all the excitement.
When my eyes opened the first thing I wanted to do was to open the curtains and watch the ocean. I haven’t quite the words and even if I did I know the feeling one gets at times like these is hard to explain.
There I was thousands of miles away from shanghai. Yet, more at home than I ever was. I sat there by the pool looking at the wide expanse of the Indian ocean. The far stretched turquoise seemed most soothing to the soul. I had an ocean reef villa, that gave me private access to the reef. I wanted to jump in the water right away but there was that lavish breakfast which awaited me.
Aswad, yet again with the best of his warmth received me when I was ready. We made our way to the breakfast restaurant. In many ways, now felt like I had arrived at Amilla. In the day light, a different world altogether. The tropical landscape, blue waters complimented with white sand. The soulful use of wood and the way the colours blended, so light on the eyes and worked a calming effect on the mind.
The huge spread of exotic fruits caught my eyes. There were live counters and a lot of options for all kinds of people. The cereals and the variety of fruits had me full. What I also loved is how every place I ate at Amilla, had it’s own distinct styling and not to forget the beautiful view.
When I was done with the breakfast and lounging around. Aswad picked me up and we started the orientation tour. During which I was introduced to some of the finest people I would meet on the island and befriend. They all managed or looked after one of the facilities or services I was to enjoy during my trip. The health centre, the spa, the water sports area, the various restaurants and the wine cellar.
Out of curiosity, I even insisted on seeing the various other stay options that we passed by and caught my attention. They happily agreed to my request. These were by far the biggest of living spaces and most luxurious of plannings I had seen. There were the 2-3 bedroom residences that had living rooms bigger than some community halls I had been to.. All of them with spectacular views of the ocean, landscaped lawns and top class amenities.
There was even a tree house, a concept that had always fascinated me. Only, here I was seeing the most luxurious tree house of all times. To be on a tree house with a swimming pool and breath taking view would eventually find a permanent spot in my memory. After that amusing tour of the resort. We returned to my room. Where I was free to do as I wish and should I feel like doing anything else, Aswad would arrange it for me.
However, I had my eyes set on the reef. It was time for some snorkelling. Maldives is known to have some of the best reefs and the clearest of waters. At Amilla, I had a private access to the reef. This was yet another brilliant snorkelling experiences and the best part that it was right in the backyard of my ocean reef villa. In simpler words, with all the colourful fishes and corals. It almost felt like I was swimming inside a huge and beautifully decorated fish tank. And hours just passed. I did have a very nice spa session later that afternoon. But I will save it for a bit later. As it was something I enjoyed so much that I visited the spa everyday.
That night dinner was at the Grill. Some scrumptious sea food got served. And then, I met with the very lovely Rae from the offices of Amilla. We had a long conversation about life on islands, Maldives and holidays. We took one of those couches laid out on the sand. The atmosphere was lively with a cool breeze all over the place.
While, the recommended and well admired “French Martini” in my hand could have been responsible for my feeling so lively and happy. I think it was a credit partly deserved by the in house DJ – Angie, who was stationed right next to the bar and played just the kind of music that gets your spirits up and foot tapping. And the warmth wasn’t a limited characteristic. At least, not on this island as everyone I met or was introduced to by Rae, made me feel equally comfortable. It felt like they were part of one big family and they kept welcoming me into it. That night I went to bed late. But slept as good as I ever did.
Coming up next is my following three days in Maldives enjoying diving , SPA, and Yoga experience.
