I’ve always believed that there are two types of people in this world. First, there are those who know how to love themselves and second are those who are on the path to learning it. It is an important thing, because only once you can love yourself, will you love others well.
Luckily for me, all that I do and all that I love pretty much goes hand in hand for most of the time. A thing such as spa or are treat would fall in my health and wellness regimen. And traveling to another country for a break that involves loads of health and wellness, makes travel even sweeter. It is by far the best way of spending holidays.
Now, I remember the last time I sat looking at my computer screen. I was trying to read up and put together a decent itinerary for Sri Lanka. I was filled with the excitement of things I was about to indulge in.
Now that I am back, I take it upon me to share my thoughts with my fellow readers, friends and family alike. While, my videos will give you a better idea of what I could possibly talk about or share. I thought writing down will always help cover a thing or two or even athought that is beyond the capacities of the visual medium
To begin with, I’ve had the most relaxing and joyful two weeks of traveling. A big shout for my lovely friends Nilusha and Imesha for their unique venture “Ayurva Traveller”. Simply put, they’re a charming pair of travel wellness experts who’ve put a lot of thought and crafted some brilliant wellness packages for travellers. (www.ayurvatraveller.com)
Nilusha, who spearheads the start-up is a dear friend of mine. So, for me it made sense to rely on their expertise to help plan a laid back and wellness focusing holiday in their country. While, Sri Lanka had been on my mind for quite some time.
It was only upon their invitation and the increasingly maddening nature of my days in shanghai, that I decided now was the perfect time for a holiday.
A period during which, I experienced several relaxed days of quiet beaches, mesmerizing scenery, magical spa’s, life changing Reiki and yoga sessions along with many unique things that formed part of my wellness trip.
An experience so calming that it is beyond my descriptions. And guess what, all that in the backdrop of a beautiful country, friendly smiling faces, great weather and some of the best possible sea food.
My first day in Sri Lanka started on a very healthy note with Sri Lankan breakfasts. When you’ve tasted it, you’d understand why egg hoppers are such a craze with tourists. Plus being a tropical place, Sri Lanka has abundant varieties of fruits grown in the country.
It would take one a lot of effort, to end up with a bad food experience there. Personally, for me each meal was superb and only made me look forward to the next one.
Post breakfast, my lovely friend Nilusha drove us to Serena’s yoga studio. The Om space is by far the best equipped yoga studio in Colombo or even Sri Lanka for that matter. It is spacious, peaceful and has a special positive vibe that I could feel from the moment I stepped into the studio.
Most importantly it has a brilliant mind behind it, yoga trainer and enthusiast Serena Burgess. While, Om space teaches several forms of yoga, the type that me and Nilusha were about to experience is called the Vinyasa yoga. Also, popularly known as the flow yoga.
It involved a series of poses where movements were synchronized with the breathing. The instructor guided us as to inhale or exhale when transitioning from one movement to another. While Vinyasa has several health benefits, the simplest and silliest is that it makes you feel good after the sessions. Which is how we both felt along with lots of energy. If only I could accommodate something like this in my daily schedule, I know I’d be way fitter and happier through my days. For now, this was a wonderful start.
After the yoga session, we spent time exploring the yoga studio. We discussed several other yoga and Reiki sessions that Nilusha arranges for travellers like me who are on a quick and healthy getaway from their hectic lives.
Soon we met one of the nicest ladies I’ve known so far, our Reiki expert Mrs Mohini Ahangama. It got me very curious and what followed was a soulful one on one Reiki session with her.
Reiki is basically a technique that uses universal life energy to initiate healing from within. I can’t quite describe how personal and lifting my session turned out to be. In Mohini, I found a friend and lovely human being capable of such a wonderful feat. I look at Reiki as a very helpful tool for self improvement. It helped get in touch with my inner self as it did for many others.
This is one of those things that you need to definitely experience in person. Now, I was starting to feel so lucky about having had this experience today. While, this morning alone could have made my trip worth it. But as Nilusha put it, it was just the beginning and I had lot more waiting for me in the days to come.
This followed with some lovely organic food at the good market. It is a weekly market set up in Colombo where some delicious food made from organic ingredients is served. Lots of small stalls offering a variety of food ranging from Sri Lankan curries to local vegetable produce, fruit juices and delicious homebaked cakes. It is a perfect spot for people watching too.
That evening followed with a nice walk by the galle face road. Watching the pinkish skies and a beautiful sunset there with locals taking a stroll felt so soothing. On one side we had the infinite view of the ocean and on the other tall sky rises from the modern Colombo.
Dinner was no short of a gastronomical affair with lots of fresh sea food in one of the best restaurants in Colombo. A healthy walk back to the hotel passing by several shopping stores, watching happy faces and a well lit starry sky. This was a Sunday, my only day in Colombo and we were doing all what a Colombo local loves to do. Which is take it easy, be happy and eat great food!
